Too late for grocery shopping on Nyepi Eve 2025.
A Visit from My Landlords

My fridge is full for the first time in a while.

It was the day before Nyepi in 2025.
Except for one year, I’ve spent a total of 14 Nyepi days here in Bali.
Nyepi is the Balinese Day of Silence. On this day, everyone stays indoors, and all lights must be turned off until 6 a.m. the next morning.
So unless you’re planning to stay in a hotel, you need to stock up your fridge in advance. Supermarkets get extremely crowded the day before, so it’s best to prepare at least two or three days early.
That day, my Balinese landlords visited to carry out a traditional prayer ceremony.
After the prayer, they gave me all the ceremonial food as a gift, adding to my Nyepi food supply.
It was one of those moments that warms the heart of someone living far from home.
